The snow has come!

I’ve lived in eastern NC since 1998 and I’ve NEVER seen it snow twice in one year…much less twice in DECEMBER! But here we are, with probably 8 inches on the ground and it’s still coming down hard. I think we might be snowbound for a couple of days. The road crews have given up…they can’t keep up with the roads with it falling at an inch an hour. It’s gorgeous…The Doc and the boys are outside having a snowball fight and working on a snowman. It’s so beautiful!

Today is Boxing Day. I asked a friend what Boxing Day actually was since she had posted about it on her Facebook, but she wasn’t sure (other than it being a bank holiday in British nations. So, since I figured I needed to know what it was since we’d be experiencing it in New Zealand, I looked it up on Wikipedia. It seems that there are a number of possibilities for the origins of Boxing Day. One is that it was a day when alms boxes were put out at churches to collect money for the poor on the day after Christmas. Another is that masters would give their servants a box of presents and leftover food on Dec 26 to make up for (or, to keep them from rebelling from) having them work to serve the master’s family on Christmas.

It seems that the overarching idea is that it is a day of charity, though. Sounds like something the USA would do well to celebrate.

Enjoy the snow, everyone! I’ll try to post some pictures of the kids (yes, all three of my boys 😉 ) later!
